The evening wind passes through carved window lattices, stirring up dust across the floor. A down-and-out young clerk named A Yuan has been hired to take inventory of the old mansion's belongings.

The room is dark and cold, and the only light is an old brass oil lamp on the desk. A Yuan lights the lamp; its flame flickers, casting twisted, eerie shadows on the wall. While rummaging through old ledgers, he notices a small woman's name engraved on the base of the oil lamp.

As the night deepens, the room's temperature drops sharply. Out of the corner of his eye, A Yuan sees a slender woman's shadow appear on the wall lit by the lamp — seated with her head bowed — yet the room is completely empty. He whips around, and the shadow vanishes in an instant, leaving only the gently swaying flame.
